Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 12 | Pitch size: 25x36

  • Play starts with a 5v3 rondo inside a central grid, with the possession team tasked with retaining the ball under pressure. Once the 3 defenders win possession or force the ball outside the grid, four outside players immediately become live and join the defenders, who now transition into a team of 7 in possession against 5 pressing players. The objective for the 7 is to retain possession for a minimum of 10 passes, while the 5 pressing players attempt to win the ball and score into either goal. Two of the outside players are goalkeepers positioned in goals, adding realism to the transition and decision-making.

  • • Speed of Transition:
Emphasise immediate reaction on regain or loss, switching mindset quickly between pressing and possession roles.

    • Support Angles in Overload:
Coach players to create constant passing lanes, offering depth, width and clear body shapes to receive.

    • Ball Circulation Under Pressure:
Encourage quick circulation, minimal touches and intelligent ball speed to unbalance the pressing unit.

    • Pressing Organisation & Triggers:
Reinforce coordinated pressing, clear triggers and compact distances when attempting to win possession.

  • Two-Touch Limit for the 7v5:
Restrict the possession team to two touches once the practice transitions into the overload phase.

    Focus:
Improves first-touch quality, faster decision-making and sharper ball speed under realistic pressure.

  • Directional Scoring on Regains:
Require the pressing team to score within a time limit after regaining possession.

    Focus:
Encourages explosive counter-pressing reactions and quick attacking decisions after winning the ball.
