Instructions/Setup:

This practice begins with a 3v1 build-up phase in one half of the grid. After completing 'x' number of passes, the team in possession must play forward and transition into a 3v2 attacking phase. The attacking team will attempt to break down the defense and score in the opposite goal.

If the defending team wins possession during the 3v1 phase, they are immediately allowed to counterattack without needing to complete any further passes. This encourages quick transitions and improves reaction times both offensively and defensively.

Coaching Notes:

• Patient Build-Up: The team in possession should focus on maintaining control and completing 'x' number of passes in tight spaces, using short, quick touches to move the ball around the grid. The key is to maintain composure and look for the right moment to progress forward.

• Quick Transition: If the defending team wins possession, they should look to counterattack as quickly as possible. Encourage immediate, decisive forward passes, aiming to exploit the numerical advantage before the defenders can reorganize.

• Spacing and Timing: When transitioning into the 3v2 phase, the attacking team should focus on maintaining good width and depth, pulling defenders out of position to create space. Timing runs and passes is crucial to ensure a successful attack.

• Defensive Awareness: Defenders should work together to press and close down the ball quickly. If the defending team wins possession, they need to immediately switch focus to counterattacking, aiming for a fast-paced, direct approach.

Progression 1: Introduce a Time Limit:

Add a time limit for each phase. The attacking team must complete the 3v2 attack within a set number of seconds after transitioning, which will increase the urgency and intensity of the exercise.

Focus: Promotes quicker decision-making, faster transitions, and sharper passing under time pressure.

Progression 2: Rotate Defensive Roles:

After each phase, rotate the defensive players so that different individuals get the opportunity to experience both attacking and defending roles. This ensures that all players improve their ability to transition in both directions.

Focus: Develops both attacking and defensive skills, enhancing players' adaptability and overall game understanding.
