Instructions/Setup:

This practice simulates a situation where the attacking team makes a misplaced pass, creating an opportunity for the defending team to counterattack. The practice begins with a pass into the attacker, which is deliberately mishandled, allowing the defender to recover and challenge the counterattack.

After the misplaced pass, the defender must quickly recover around a central pole and then attempt to stop a 2v1 counterattack. The attacking team must move quickly and exploit the momentary overload, aiming to score into the middle goal while the defense is disorganized.

Coaching Notes:

• React Quickly to Mistakes: After the misplaced pass, the defender must react rapidly to recover and engage the counterattack. Emphasize the need for defenders to be proactive, getting back into position as soon as possible.

• Counterattack with Speed: The attacking team should focus on transitioning quickly, using the overload to their advantage. Encourage quick, direct passing and decisive runs to exploit the defensive gap before it can be closed.

• Decision-Making Under Pressure: Players involved in the counterattack should be encouraged to make quick decisions, deciding when to pass and when to shoot. Focus on creating opportunities with fewer touches and faster execution.

• Defensive Awareness: The defender who is recovering around the pole must focus on positioning and timing their challenge. Encourage the defender to be aware of the attacking players’ movements and be prepared to disrupt the attack at the right moment.

Progression 1: Add More Defenders:

Introduce a second defender into the recovery phase to create a 3v2 scenario. This will allow the defenders to have a better chance of stopping the counterattack, but the attackers will still be outnumbered, encouraging them to be quicker and more efficient.

Focus: Challenges attackers to move faster and make better decisions when faced with an increased defensive presence.
