Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 9 | Pitch size: 12x18

  • Play begins with 6 players in possession against 2 defenders in a tight grid. The team in possession must complete 'x' number of passes before they can attempt to score. This encourages quick ball circulation, communication, and movement off the ball to break down the defensive pressure. The attacking team must focus on maintaining possession while looking for opportunities to progress and take a shot on goal.

If the defending team wins possession, they can immediately attempt to score in either of the goals, adding an element of pressure and creating a transition phase for both sides. This promotes the importance of defensive work and counter-attacking from the defenders, while the attacking team must react quickly to regain possession.

  • • Ball Circulation: Encourage quick, sharp passes between players while maintaining a good spread across the grid. Players should focus on moving into space to create passing options and ensure fluidity in the attack.

    • Quick Decision Making: Players need to make decisions quickly and play at tempo to avoid being caught out by the defenders. Encourage players to think ahead and anticipate the next pass or movement.

    • Defensive Transition: Once possession is lost, players should immediately react to pressure the ball, forcing errors or creating turnovers. Emphasize the importance of high work rate in regaining possession.

    • Maintain Shape: In possession, players should keep good width and depth to stretch the defensive block and create passing lanes. Avoid congesting the space and allow for better movement and options.

  • Increase Passes Required:

Increase the number of passes required before the attacking team can attempt to score. This will force the attacking team to keep possession for longer periods and improve their patience in build-up play.

Focus: Develops patience in possession and improves ball retention under pressure.

  • Defenders Play Out of Possession:

Allow the defending team to attempt to play out from the back once they win possession, rather than immediately going for a goal. This can encourage them to build confidence and composure in transition.

Focus: Enhances defensive skills in possession and promotes a more structured transition from defense to attack.
