Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 16 | Pitch size: 30x30

  • This rondo breaks a 343 formation down into specific zones, where the possession team will play 4v2 or 3v2. The #6 can be allowed to slide vertically to create 4v2's in the top 2 zones, while the #9 is required to slide horizontally to work across 2 zones. The practice transitions into a 6v3 centrally if the pressing team manages to regain possession.

  • • Positional Awareness – The #6 should focus on their movement between zones, ensuring they create overloads in the top two zones. Encourage the player to be aware of when to slide vertically and when to remain in position to help control the build-up.

    • Pressing Principles – The pressing team should work on closing down passing lanes and forcing the possession team into less favorable areas. Pressing players need to anticipate the ball and use their positioning to limit the number of passing options for the attackers.

    • Horizontal Movement – The #9 should focus on working across two zones to support the build-up play and provide passing options. They must adjust their position to maximize space and facilitate quick transitions.

    • Quick Transitions – If the pressing team regains possession, they need to transition quickly into a 6v3 central overload. Players must be aware of the available space and exploit it to create attacking opportunities.

  • Smaller Grid

Reduce the size of the grid to increase pressure on the possession team. This will force quicker decision-making and improve passing accuracy under pressure.

Focus: Improving decision-making and passing speed under pressure.

  • Add a Counter-Attack Phase

Allow the pressing team to counter-attack quickly if they regain possession, transitioning from a 6v3 central overload into a fast-paced counter. The defending team must react and reorganize quickly to prevent the counter.
