Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 15 | Pitch size: Half Pitch

  • This is a continuous 3v2 counter-attacking drill that emphasizes quick transitions and decision-making in overload situations. Each phase begins with a 3v2 attack toward goal. Once the attack concludes, one attacker (the last player to touch the ball) drops out, while an additional attacker joins the two defenders to form the new attacking trio for the next wave. The ball is always served by the coach to the fresh attacker, maintaining tempo and encouraging fast, realistic transitions between attack and defense.

  • • Transition Speed – Emphasize rapid transition from defense to attack and vice versa. Players should react immediately to the change of phase, simulating a real match environment.

    • Communication – Encourage defenders and attackers to communicate clearly during overlaps, recovery runs, and tracking runners to manage the overload.

    • Decision-Making in Overload – The 3 attackers must quickly identify when to exploit numerical superiority through passes, dribbles, or shots.

    • Defensive Shape – The 2 defenders should focus on delaying the attack, staying compact, and forcing play into less dangerous areas to buy time for recovery.

  • Limited Touches for Attackers
Restrict the attacking trio to two-touch play to increase speed of thought and ball movement.

Focus: Enhances quick decision-making and forces players to be efficient with limited touches in the final third.

  • Time Limit to Score
Introduce a five-second time limit for the 3v2 attack to result in a shot on goal.

Focus: Increases urgency in the attack and simulates the fast-paced nature of counter-attacking opportunities in matches.
