Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 18 | Pitch size: 1/2 Pitch

  • This attacking practice focuses on creating and finishing opportunities in wide areas. Play starts with the goalkeeper making a long pass to a central player. The central player then passes the ball into one of the two wide grids on the field. From this point, the attacking team must work to progress the play down the wide area. To increase the attacking options, the deeper central player or one of the central attackers can join the wide grid to create a 4v3 or 5v3 overload. Once the ball is successfully progressed in the wide area, the team must attempt to finish the attack with 2 or 3 players attacking the space in the box.

  • • Wide Area Progression – The initial pass into the wide grid should be precise and well-weighted. The player receiving the ball in the wide area must quickly decide whether to drive toward the byline, cut inside, or deliver a cross.

    • Overloading the Wide Area – Encourage the deeper central player or central attackers to join the wide grid in order to create an overload, which forces the defending team to adjust and open up space for attacking opportunities. This will help develop attacking width and supporting runs.

    • Movement in the Final Third – Once the ball is in the wide area, attackers should look to make runs into the box. One attacker should aim for the near post, another for the far post, and one should be ready to make a late run for a cutback. Emphasize timing of runs and spacing to create goal-scoring opportunities.

    • Quick Decision-Making – The player with the ball in the wide area should make a quick decision on whether to cross, dribble, or pass based on the position of the attacking runners and the defenders.

  • Add Defensive Pressure in Wide Areas
Introduce a defender into the wide grid to create a 3v2 or 4v3 overload. This will challenge the attacking team to be more precise with their decision-making and movement in tight spaces.

    Focus:
Improves decision-making in tight areas and encourages attacking players to recognize when to commit defenders and when to pass.

  • Targeted Finishing
Set up mini-goals or cones inside the box to serve as specific target areas. Players should focus on delivering accurate crosses into these areas for specific attacking players to finish, replicating the need for precision in crossing.

    Focus:
Develops accuracy in crossing and finishing under pressure, ensuring that attackers can finish crosses in specific target zones (e.g., near-post, far-post, or central).
