Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 7 | Pitch size: 1/2 Pitch

  • This finishing practice focuses on forward passing, forward running, and finishing. The drill begins with a horizontal pass, after which the passer immediately makes a hard forward run to attack space inside the box. The player who received the initial pass then plays a long diagonal ball into the space where the attacking player is running. Players should be encouraged to vary their finishing techniques, using either first-time finishes or taking a touch to control the ball before finishing, depending on their distance from goal and the timing of the pass.

  • • Timing of Runs – The player making the forward run must time their movement to arrive in the box just as the ball is played into the space. They should look to anticipate the pass and attack the space quickly and decisively.

    • Passing Accuracy – The player delivering the diagonal ball should focus on accuracy and weight, ensuring the ball is played into the correct area for the attacker to run onto, allowing for an easy first-time finish or a controlled touch.

    • Finishing Technique – Encourage players to adjust their finishing technique based on the situation. For close-range balls, a first-time finish may be ideal, while a controlled touch followed by a finish is better for balls played further away.

    • Awareness of Space – The player receiving the ball must be aware of the space they are attacking and adjust their run accordingly. The key is to ensure the ball is played into a position where the attacker can control and finish without pressure from defenders.

  • Add Defenders for Pressure
Introduce a defender into the box to apply light pressure on the attacker after receiving the ball, forcing them to finish under pressure.
Focus: Simulates real-game conditions, where attackers must finish while dealing with defensive pressure.

  • Vary the Type of Cross
Vary the type of diagonal pass (e.g., low driven crosses, lofted crosses) to challenge the attacker to adjust their finishing technique.
Focus: Enhances the attacker’s ability to finish from different types of deliveries and improve adaptability in the box.
