Instructions/Setup:
This practice is designed to simulate a fast-paced, continuous attacking and defensive scenario. Three attacking players will work together to deliver a cross into the box, while three defenders attempt to deny them any goal-scoring opportunities. The defenders must stay alert and position themselves effectively to prevent a shot on target, using communication and teamwork to disrupt the attacking play.
Once the defensive team completes their task, they must quickly transition to the opposite side of the grid, where they will now become the attacking team. This transition is seamless, allowing for continuous play with new attacking players constantly entering the grid. This drill is especially useful in pre-season training, as it combines attacking play with the necessity for quick transitions, while also helping players work on disguised runs and attacking timing.
Coaching Notes:
• Quick Transitions: Emphasize the importance of quick transitions between attack and defense. Players should be ready to move quickly and be alert when the switch happens, maintaining intensity throughout.
• Disguised Runs: Encourage attackers to use disguised runs, making it harder for defenders to anticipate their movements. These runs should be timed well, ensuring they arrive at the right moment to receive the cross.
• Defensive Awareness: Defenders should focus on staying compact, blocking passing lanes, and communicating with teammates to prevent attackers from getting a clean shot on goal.
• Crossing Accuracy: Instruct the attacking players delivering the crosses to focus on accuracy and timing. The ball should be delivered to areas that give attackers a better chance to score, such as the near post or back post areas.
