Practice Breakdown:
Number of Players: 11 | Pitch size: 35x25
In this practice, a team of 4 players in possession aims to use 3 neutral players to create a numerical advantage of 7v4 against the defending team. The possession team focuses on maintaining control by effectively combining with the neutrals to progress play and break defensive lines. When the defending team wins the ball, they immediately transition to attack by attempting to score in either of the two mini goals positioned at each end of the grid. Upon scoring, the defending team switches roles with the previous possession players, while the 3 neutrals always remain neutral throughout the drill.
This drill develops high-level possession skills under pressure, encouraging players to exploit numerical superiority with quick passing and smart movement. It also sharpens defensive reaction and transition awareness as players must quickly switch from defending to attacking phases while adapting to dynamic situations.
• Encourage quick, accurate passing involving neutral players – Players should use sharp, well-weighted passes to fully utilize the numerical advantage consistently.
• Demand constant movement and spatial awareness off the ball – Players must find pockets of space and offer effective support to maintain possession under pressure.
• Reinforce quick transitions between defense and attack – Players need to react rapidly after turnovers and adapt positioning to counterattack with intent.
• Stress communication and teamwork throughout all phases – Players should clearly communicate roles, ball movement, and defensive adjustments to optimize team shape.
Limit Neutral Player Touches
Restrict neutral players to a maximum of two touches to increase the challenge and speed of play in possession phases.
Focus: Develop quicker decision-making, sharper passing, and improved off-the-ball movement under increased pressure and limited touches.
