Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 11 | Pitch size: 1/2 Pitch

  • This unopposed finishing drill begins with three players combining on one side of the pitch through quick, precise passing to build rhythm and open space. After the combination, a long diagonal switch is played to a wide winger. The winger must take a positive first touch forward, controlling the ball efficiently to create crossing opportunities. From this wide position, the winger delivers a cross into the penalty area where two attackers time their runs to finish effectively and score.

The focus is on developing clean combination play, accurate long passing, and quality first touches to set up attacking chances. The attacking players practice timing their runs and finishing unopposed, allowing them to concentrate fully on technique and positioning without pressure.

  • • Emphasize sharp, accurate passing during the initial 3-player combination – Players should focus on crisp passes with the right weight and timing to break defensive lines.

    • Encourage a decisive, forward first touch from the winger – This touch should open space and allow the winger to quickly deliver an effective cross.

    • Reinforce timing and angle of attacker runs into the box – Attackers must synchronize their movements to arrive at the optimal moment for a high-quality finish.

    • Focus on quality of crosses into the penalty area – Crosses should be well-weighted and targeted, allowing attackers to finish comfortably with either foot or head.

  • Add a Passive Defender to the Winger

Introduce a passive defender who lightly pressures the winger, forcing a quicker decision and more precise first touch under mild pressure.

Focus: Improve winger’s composure, ball control, and crossing accuracy when faced with defensive pressure.

  • Include Defensive Pressure on Attackers

Add two defenders in the box to challenge the attackers, requiring sharper timing and more precise finishing under realistic defensive pressure.

Focus: Enhance attackers’ ability to time runs and finish cleanly in tight, contested situations.
