Instructions/Setup:
This possession-based practice involves 4 outside players combining with 2 inside players to create a 6v4 possession scenario. The team of 6 must attempt to keep possession and complete 'X' number of passes for a point, encouraging quick and accurate passing to maintain control of the ball.
The defending team of 4 players must attempt to regain possession and then score into any of the 4 mini goals scattered around the area. If the defending team successfully regains possession and scores, they swap positions with the 4 outside players, creating a dynamic flow to the drill.
Coaching Notes:
• Passing Accuracy and Movement: Emphasize the importance of sharp, accurate passing to maintain possession. Players should also focus on creating passing lanes and supporting each other, constantly moving to offer options and space for the ball carrier.
• Defensive Shape: The defending team must remain compact and work together to block passing lanes. Encourage them to press in unison to put pressure on the ball and force mistakes, with a strong focus on communication.
• Transition to Attack: As soon as possession is regained, players must transition quickly from defense to attack. This can be achieved by encouraging fast, direct passes to exploit gaps and immediately threaten the mini goals.
• Awareness and Patience: The team in possession should be patient, waiting for an opportunity to break down the defense. Encourage players to be aware of their surroundings, look for weak spots, and wait for the right moment to progress the ball forward.
Progression 1: Increase the Number of Passes for a Point:
Increase the number of passes the attacking team must complete to earn a point (e.g., from 'X' to 'Y'). This forces the team to maintain possession for longer periods and develop better passing combinations.
Focus: This progression enhances the attacking team's ability to keep the ball under pressure and work together to break down the defense, while also improving their patience and decision-making in possession.
