Instructions/Setup:
This semi-opposed build-up drill allows teams to work on specific patterns of play while progressing from the middle third into the attacking third. The play ends with a 2v2 attack in a small grid positioned just inside the wide areas of the halfway line, where there are two mini goals that teams can score into.
The attacking team must work the ball through the build-up phase, focusing on moving the ball quickly and efficiently, before entering the 2v2 zone. In the progression, a center forward positioned on the halfway line can drop into either grid, creating a 3v2 overload and offering more attacking options.
Coaching Notes:
• Build-Up Play: Encourage the team to focus on maintaining possession in the middle third and using quick, short passes to transition the ball towards the wide areas. Players should look to switch the ball when necessary and identify space for attacking runs.
• Movement Off the Ball: Off-the-ball movement is key for creating space in the wide grids. The attacking players should look to make diagonal runs into space and support the ball carrier, ensuring they have multiple options for progression.
• Quick Transition into Attack: When the ball reaches the 2v2 grid, attackers should look to use their numerical advantage and play quickly to exploit any spaces left by the defenders. Make sure they focus on timing their runs to receive the ball in good positions to finish.
• Center Forward Drop-In: In the progression, the center forward should look to drop into the grid intelligently, creating overloads for the attacking team. The attacking players must look to use this advantage, with the center forward offering a focal point for combination play.
Progression 1: 3v2 Overload in Wide Grid:
Introduce a center forward who starts on the halfway line and can drop into either of the grids, creating a 3v2 overload in the wide area. The extra player in the grid should help increase passing options and support the attack.
Focus: This progression encourages attacking teams to make use of overloads and give them more attacking options to break down defensive setups.
Progression 2: Introduce a Defender in the Build-Up:
Add a defender into the build-up phase who will look to disrupt the attacking team’s passing. The offensive team must still focus on completing the build-up play and create an effective transition into the 2v2 finishing area.
Focus: This will improve the attacking team’s ability to work under pressure, while also developing their ability to create space and make decisions in tight situations.
