Instructions/Setup:
This transfer rondo involves three teams of six players, with two teams in possession and one team defending. The possession teams must work together to keep the ball, while the defending team works to regain possession by applying pressure on the ball.
In this drill, three defenders press into the ball-sided grid, while the other three defenders screen the central line to prevent any easy passes across. After completing 'x' number of passes, the possession players are allowed to transfer the ball to the opposite side of the grid, where the defending team will then shift their pressure to the new ball carrier.
Coaching Notes:
• Ball Retention: The possession teams must focus on quick, accurate passing to retain the ball and move it across the grid. Encourage players to make short, sharp passes and always be aware of the next pass.
• Defensive Positioning: Defenders must work together to create pressure on the ball while screening potential passing lanes. The three players pressuring the ball should work to limit the space the ball carrier has, while the others need to anticipate and block any central passes.
• Transfer Timing: The possession teams should focus on timing their transfers effectively. After completing the required number of passes, they should look for opportunities to switch the ball to the opposite side, ensuring the ball is moved quickly to exploit spaces created by the defenders' positioning.
• Anticipation and Awareness: Defenders must stay alert, constantly adjusting their positioning to either press or screen based on the ball’s location. The attacking players must also read the movement of the defenders to make the right decisions when transferring the ball.
Progression 1: Increase the Number of Passes:
Increase the number of passes required before the ball can be transferred to the opposite side of the grid. This will encourage the possession teams to be more patient with their ball movement and increase their ability to retain possession under pressure.
Focus: This progression encourages better ball control and decision-making under pressure while improving players' passing accuracy.
Progression 2: Defender Overload:
Add an extra defender into the drill, so there are four defenders pressing the ball-sided grid. This will increase the intensity of the drill and make it harder for the possession teams to maintain control, encouraging them to move the ball quicker and more intelligently.
Focus: This progression will help players develop the ability to deal with defensive overloads and improve their decision-making when faced with a greater number of defenders.
