Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 12 | Pitch size: 30x40

  • This small-sided game encourages players to dribble forward into space and utilize quick thinking in tight situations. Play starts 4v4 centrally, with 4 bounce players positioned around the outside, each limited to 1 touch. The central players are tasked with creating opportunities to dribble through the defense and into the end zone, where they must be in control of possession to score.

Once a team successfully dribbles into the end zone with possession, they win the round. The losing team quickly switches with the outside players, and play restarts. This setup promotes fast-paced play and enhances players' dribbling and decision-making skills.

  • • Dribbling Technique: Encourage players to use a variety of dribbling techniques, such as quick touches, changes of direction, and feints, to beat defenders and break into space. Players should focus on keeping the ball close while maintaining control in tight spaces.

    • Awareness of Space: Players must constantly scan the field to identify available space and exploit gaps in the defense. Encourage players to make runs into open areas, drawing defenders out and creating lanes for teammates.

    • Decision-Making in Possession: Players need to decide whether to dribble, pass, or take on a defender based on the space and pressure they face. Encourage players to recognize when to hold possession, when to accelerate into space, and when to release the ball to bounce players.

    • Quick Transition: When possession is lost, the transition to defense should be quick and organized. Encourage defending players to close down space quickly and force the attacking team into making rushed decisions.

  • Add a Time Limit:

Implement a time limit for each round, such as 2 minutes per possession. This creates urgency for teams to move the ball quickly and make decisive actions to score. Teams must balance speed with maintaining possession in order to achieve the goal.

Focus: The time limit adds pressure and encourages quicker decision-making in both attacking and defending situations.

  • Limited Dribbles per Player:

Limit each player to a specific number of dribbles, such as 3 dribbles per player per possession. This encourages players to be more efficient with the ball, combining dribbles and passes to move the ball forward while still keeping possession.

Focus: This progression encourages faster ball movement and forces players to make quicker decisions under pressure.
