Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 18 | Pitch size: 60x40

  • In this possession-based small-sided game, teams of 8 play against 4 defenders with the goal of completing 10 successful passes before having the opportunity to score. Upon reaching 10 passes, the attacking team can score either into the main goal or any of the two mini goals within their grid.

If the defending team manages to win possession, they must transition quickly under pressure to move the ball into their side of the grid and begin their 8v4 phase of possession, aiming to complete 10 passes and score.

  • • Passing Accuracy and Tempo: Emphasize the importance of maintaining a high tempo while ensuring accurate passes. Players should focus on quick ball circulation and movement off the ball to create passing lanes and options for the player in possession.

    • Defensive Shape: Defenders should work on maintaining compactness and positioning to deny passing lanes. Encourage the defending team to press aggressively and work together to win possession, but also be mindful of leaving space for the attackers to exploit.

    • Transition Play: Upon regaining possession, defenders must quickly transition to the attack. Encourage quick, decisive passes to move the ball out of pressure and into their side of the grid. The team transitioning should look for the first available option to keep the momentum going.

    • Spatial Awareness: Players in possession must use the space effectively to stretch the defending team. Encourage the attackers to move the ball into the wider areas or between the lines to create more space and better opportunities to progress the attack.

  • Add Time Pressure:

Implement a time limit (e.g., 30 seconds) for the attacking team to complete 10 passes and score. This progression will push the attacking team to increase their speed of play and decision-making under time pressure.

Focus: Encourages quick passing and movement under pressure, improving players' ability to make decisions in tight situations.

  • Limit the Touches:

Reduce the number of touches per player to one or two touches. This forces the team in possession to focus on sharp, quick passes and increases the intensity of the game.

Focus: This progression encourages faster ball movement, improves first-touch accuracy, and enhances overall decision-making in tight spaces.
