Instructions/Setup:

This warm-up and SAQ (Speed, Agility, Quickness) drill focuses on improving a player's reaction time and ability to change direction quickly. Two players will play a sequence of 1-touch passes back and forth, and at any point during the drill, the top player will sprint either left or right. The bottom player must react quickly and attempt to win the sprint race to the designated spot.

This drill helps players develop their explosive speed, footwork, and agility under pressure. By reacting to sudden directional changes, players will improve their mental sharpness, anticipation, and ability to transition quickly from one movement to another.

Coaching Notes:

• Quick Reaction: Emphasize the importance of quick reactions when the top player changes direction. The bottom player must stay alert, anticipating the sprint direction and responding instantly to the call.

• Explosive Speed: Encourage the bottom player to use their explosive speed to get off the mark quickly. Focus on short, sharp steps to reach maximum speed in the shortest time possible.

• Footwork: Work on the footwork of both players, ensuring that their steps are quick and their body positioning remains low for agility. The top player must use a proper push-off to maximize speed, while the bottom player should stay on their toes for fast reactions.

• Anticipation: In addition to reacting, encourage the bottom player to anticipate the sprint direction. This helps build mental sharpness and allows players to prepare mentally before reacting physically.

Progression 1: Add Directional Changes:

Allow the top player to change direction multiple times within the sequence, forcing the bottom player to react and change direction as well.

Focus: Increases the complexity of the drill and challenges the players' ability to change direction quickly, improving agility and decision-making under pressure.

Progression 2: Increase Speed of Passing:

Reduce the time taken to complete each 1-touch pass, forcing both players to make quicker decisions and react faster.

Focus: Enhances quick thinking and reaction time under pressure, promoting faster decision-making and sharper movements.
