Practice Breakdown:
Number of Players: 2 | Pitch size: 15x15
This 1v1 drill focuses on developing the player's ability to receive the ball under pressure and quickly turn to progress the play. The attacker must work on controlling the ball while under pressure from the defender, using techniques such as shielding and body positioning to protect the ball and evade pressure.
The coach plays the ball into the grid, prompting both the attacker and defender to react immediately. The attacker’s goal is to control the ball, turn quickly to face the goal, and then finish by scoring into one of the two mini goals. The defender’s objective is to prevent the attacker from turning and playing forward by pressuring the ball and trying to win possession.
• Receiving Under Pressure: Encourage players to receive with their back foot and open their body to allow for a quicker turn. Remind them to stay calm and composed when under pressure from behind.
• Using the Body to Protect the Ball: Players should use their body to shield the ball and make it difficult for the defender to win possession. Teach them to pivot and protect the ball with the body, keeping their body between the ball and the defender.
• Quick Turning: After receiving, players should focus on turning quickly to face the goal. Whether they use a drag back, feint, or a simple pivot, the key is to create space for themselves in a swift motion.
• Finishing Under Pressure: Once the player turns, they should be encouraged to take a quick shot or pass into the mini goal. Stress the importance of decision-making when under pressure and finishing with composure.
Defender Gains a Head Start:
The defender gets a slight head start by being allowed to move before the ball is played in. This creates additional pressure for the attacker to receive and turn under more intense conditions.
Focus: Increases the urgency and speed of the drill, helping attackers develop the ability to perform under more pressure.
Add a Time Limit:
Set a time limit for the attacker to receive, turn, and finish. This forces the attacker to be quick and decisive in their actions while under pressure.
Focus: Enhances decision-making and execution under pressure, developing the ability to play efficiently in tight situations.
