Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 6 | Pitch size: 30x30

  • This technical and cognitive practice combines dribbling, coordination and reaction-based decision-making within a competitive format. Two teams work head-to-head, with players dribbling forward through a series of obstacles, focusing on close control, speed and accuracy while maintaining awareness of their surroundings. The aim is to complete the dribbling phase efficiently while staying mentally alert for the next instruction.

Once players reach the end of the dribble, they leave their ball and must react to the coach calling out two or more colours. Players must quickly recognise, locate and touch the correct coloured cones or poles before returning to collect their ball and pass back to the next teammate. This creates a continuous relay-style competition that challenges both physical execution and cognitive processing under pressure.

  • • Close Control While Dribbling:
Encourage players to keep the ball close with controlled touches while maintaining speed and balance through the obstacles.

    • Awareness and Scanning:
Reinforce players keeping their head up where possible, preparing to react quickly to the coach’s instructions.

    • Reaction Speed and Decision-Making:
Coach players to process the colour call quickly, selecting the correct targets without hesitation or confusion.

    • Competitive Intensity and Transitions:
Emphasise quick transitions between dribbling, reacting and passing while maintaining high effort and focus throughout.

  • Increase Number of Colour Calls:
Call out three or more colours to increase cognitive load and challenge players’ processing speed.

    Focus:
Improves concentration, memory recall and the ability to make quick decisions under increasing pressure.

  • Add Movement Before Reaction Phase:
Require an additional movement or action before reacting to the colour call at the end.

    Focus:
Develops coordination, fatigue resistance and the ability to react accurately after physical exertion.
