Instructions/Setup:
In this drill, players focus on improving their technical passing ability by executing short, quick combinations and penetrating passes. The objective is to develop fluid movement, sharp passing, and the ability to break through defensive lines with incisive passes. The drill encourages quick ball circulation and decision-making to create attacking opportunities.
The setup involves players working in tight spaces, passing the ball quickly between themselves while looking to break the defensive line with a penetrative pass. The key focus is on maintaining control of possession while searching for opportunities to progress the ball forward through short combinations.
Coaching Notes:
• Quick and Accurate Passing: Players should prioritize fast, accurate passing while ensuring they don’t hold onto the ball for too long. The faster the ball moves, the more difficult it is for defenders to press and intercept.
• Use of First Touch: Encourage players to use their first touch to set up the next pass or move the ball into space. A good first touch can open up options for the next player.
• Penetrative Passing: Players should always look for opportunities to break the lines with penetrative passes, aiming to move the ball forward quickly into advanced positions.
• Awareness and Scanning: Players need to scan the field before receiving the ball to understand their options and make quicker decisions. Awareness of space, teammates, and opposition positions is key to maintaining fluid combinations.
Progression 1: Add a Defender to Pressure the Pass:
Introduce a passive defender to increase pressure on the passer. The defender should close down the passing lanes and challenge the players to make quick decisions.
Focus: Forces players to make quicker, more precise passes and encourages them to work under pressure while maintaining possession.
Progression 2: Limit the Number of Touches:
Restrict the number of touches a player can take to increase the intensity and improve the speed of play. For example, limit each player to 1 or 2 touches maximum.
Focus: Encourages players to play faster, with sharper passes and quicker decision-making, helping to replicate match conditions where time and space are limited.
