Instructions/Setup:

In this drill, teams play 4v3 possession in two separate grids, with each player numbered from 1 to 7. The objective is for the teams to maintain possession while the coach randomly calls out a number between 1 and 7. Once the number is called, the two players corresponding to that number must immediately engage in a 1v1 battle, while the rest of their team continues to focus on possession.

The drill encourages players to be sharp and quick in their transitions from team play to individual duels. It helps develop both tactical awareness during possession and individual decision-making in high-pressure 1v1 situations. The possession period provides a chance for players to work on their passing, movement, and communication, while the 1v1 element challenges them to react quickly and apply pressure effectively.

Coaching Notes:

• React Quickly: Players must be prepared for the coach to call out their number at any time. Encourage them to stay focused and ready to engage in the 1v1 whenever their number is called.

• Use of Space in Possession: While maintaining possession, players should work to find space, make accurate passes, and keep the ball moving. Ensure they are aware of their teammates' positions and the numbers of potential 1v1 opponents.

• 1v1 Focus: In the 1v1 duel, players should focus on controlling the ball, using quick touches to evade pressure, and defending with intensity. Both attacking and defending players should focus on using body positioning and speed to win the duel.

• Communication and Teamwork: Emphasize the importance of verbal and non-verbal communication in the possession phase. Players must support their teammates while being ready to transition into 1v1 situations.

Progression 1: Introduce a Time Limit for 1v1 Duels:

Limit the time for each 1v1 duel. If one player wins the ball or a clear advantage is created, the duel ends and possession resumes in the grid.

Focus: Increases the intensity of the 1v1 situations and encourages players to be more decisive and aggressive in duels.

Progression 2: Add a Scoring Opportunity After 1v1:

Once the 1v1 is resolved, the player who wins possession can attempt to score into a mini goal or pass back to their team. If they lose possession, the attacking team can attempt to score immediately.

Focus: Adds a competitive element, motivating players to win their 1v1s in order to gain a scoring opportunity for their team.
