Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 10 | Pitch size: 20x20

  • In this 4v4+2 rondo drill, one team is positioned on the outside of the grid, while the other team defends in the center. The team in possession can utilize the two central players to create a 6v4 overload, allowing them to maintain possession and create better passing options. The team on the outside earns 1 point for every ‘x’ number of passes completed, encouraging quick and efficient ball circulation.

If the defending team wins possession, they must complete a set number of passes (e.g., ‘x’ passes) in a 4v2 scenario before transitioning to the attacking role. This gives the defending team a chance to regain control and practice transitioning from defense to attack.

  • • Quick Passing and Movement: Encourage players on the outside to make quick, sharp passes to exploit the numerical advantage. They should also focus on constant movement to create passing lanes and maintain possession.

    • Using the Central Players: The two central players should be utilized as key outlets to create overloads, helping the attacking team maintain possession and progress the ball quickly through the center.

    • Pressure and Recovery: The defending team should be taught to apply pressure intelligently and try to intercept or block passes. Once possession is regained, they must quickly shift to a more attacking mindset and complete their ‘x’ passes.

    • Transitioning Quickly: Emphasize the importance of rapid transitions. Once the defending team wins the ball, they need to execute fast, accurate passes to make the most of their 4v2 advantage and switch roles quickly.

  • Limit the Number of Touches:

Introduce a restriction on the number of touches each player can take (e.g., maximum of two touches). This encourages faster ball movement and prevents the possession team from holding the ball too long.

Focus: Promotes quick thinking, faster ball circulation, and decision-making under pressure.

  • Add a Time Limit to Complete ‘X’ Passes:

Introduce a time limit for the defending team to complete their ‘x’ passes once they regain possession. This will force them to focus on speed and accuracy when transitioning into an attacking phase.

Focus: Enhances the ability to move the ball quickly under time pressure, simulating game scenarios where fast transitions are critical.
