Instructions/Setup:
This unopposed passing pattern mixes short combinations in the initial phase with longer passes to switch the play. Two square grids, positioned roughly 20 meters apart, are set up. Players complete quick one- or two-touch passes inside one grid, then switch the play with a longer diagonal pass to the opposite grid. Once the ball arrives, the same combination and switch sequence continues.
Coaching Notes:
• Short Passing Quality: Emphasize sharp, accurate passing during the combination phase. Players should focus on keeping the ball on the ground and playing with proper weight and direction.
• Scanning and Timing: Players should scan before receiving and play their pass at the right time to maintain rhythm and avoid rushed decisions.
• Body Shape: Encourage open body positions to receive on the back foot and play forward quickly, especially when preparing for the switch.
• Weight and Accuracy of Long Passes: Switches of play must be well-timed and struck with precision to allow a smooth transition between grids.
• Movement After Pass: Players must move purposefully after playing a pass to maintain angles and keep the tempo high.
Progression 1: Add Passive Pressure:
Place one passive defender in each grid to force players to adjust their position and stay alert during the short combination phase.
Focus: Helps players improve decision-making and positioning under slight pressure while maintaining technical execution.
