Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 18 | Pitch size: 30x40

  • This possession-based practice focuses on penetration, breaking lines, and transitioning between attack and defence. Two teams of six players each will work together in a 12v6 scenario, with the aim of retaining possession and breaking defensive lines, specifically through the two central players. When possession is regained, the teams must quickly switch between attacking and defending, maintaining a fluid 12v6 structure throughout the drill. To allow for smoother transitions, the two central players can combine immediately after regaining possession, giving teams a moment to readjust their positional structure before play resumes.

  • • Breaking the Lines – Encourage players to look for opportunities to pass through the central areas, either by penetrating with the ball or through precise, forward-thinking passes to the central players.

    • Transition Speed – On regaining possession, teams should shift their mindset immediately from defence to attack (or vice versa), focusing on quick passes and decision-making to exploit the transitional phase.

    • Support and Movement – Off-the-ball movement is key. Players should make runs that create passing lanes and angles for teammates, ensuring support is always available to maintain possession and progress the ball.

    • Central Players' Role – The two central players should act as focal points for possession, looking to link play and create penetration opportunities into more advanced positions.

  • Add Pressing Triggers for Defenders
Introduce a pressing trigger for the defending team to increase pressure when possession is regained (e.g., after a certain number of passes).
Focus: Tests the attacking team’s ability to react quickly under pressure while maintaining fluidity in transitions.

  • Limit the Number of Passes Before Penetration
Set a rule where teams must complete a certain number of passes (e.g., 5) before attempting to break the lines and penetrate forward.
Focus: Encourages quick ball circulation and precise decision-making to open up the defence.
