Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 9 | Pitch size: 20x40

  • Play starts with a 3v3+1 in the central zone. The team in possession must complete a minimum of five successful passes, utilizing a one-man overload. After completing the five passes, the team in possession must attempt to play a forward pass into either of the two centre forwards located on the end lines. The centre forwards must finish the ball into one of the two mini goals with a single touch. This practice is transitional, meaning that as soon as the defending team wins possession, they become the 4v3 side and must attempt to make five successful passes before trying to play the ball into the centre forwards.

  • • Positional Awareness – The players in the central zone must be aware of space and positioning to maintain the overload and create passing lanes. Encourage them to rotate positions to ensure the overload remains effective.

    • Quick Passing & Movement – Emphasize the importance of quick, accurate passing to break down the defense. Players should focus on moving off the ball to provide support and make themselves available for the next pass.

    • Centre Forward Movement – The centre forwards should focus on timing their runs and positioning to receive the ball. They need to be proactive in their movements to create space and be ready to finish the ball on their first touch.

    • Transition Speed – When possession is regained, the transition to attack should be quick. The defending team must immediately shift focus to maintaining possession and breaking lines to reach the centre forwards.

  • Increase the Passing Requirement
Increase the number of passes required to be made before a forward pass into the centre forward is allowed. For example, increase to 7 or 8 successful passes before the forward pass.
Focus: Forces the team in possession to build up play with more patience, requiring better movement and more control.

  • Limit the Time to Find the CF
Implement a time limit for how long the team can take to play the ball into the centre forwards after completing the required passes.
Focus: Increases urgency in finding the centre forward quickly, simulating pressure to deliver the ball efficiently under game conditions.
