Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 14 | Pitch size: Half Pitch

  • This drill starts with a 4v2 rondo in which two players from each team sprint across the grids to compete for possession. The team that wins possession inside the grid can then transition into a 2v2 attacking phase, with the team gaining possession first receiving a time advantage. If both teams win possession, they will compete in a 2v2 scenario. If only one team wins possession inside the rondo grid, they will attack in a 2v0 situation. The focus is on improving transition play, possession under pressure, and quick decision-making.

  • • Possession Under Pressure – Encourage players to maintain composure and quality when under pressure in the rondo. The team in possession should focus on quick, precise passes, creating triangles and using effective movement off the ball to maintain possession. Players must quickly adjust to defensive pressure and look for the best passing option.

    • Transition to Attack – Once possession is won, the team should immediately transition into attack, either into a 2v2 or 2v0 scenario. The attacking team must move quickly and decisively, utilizing quick passing and smart movement to exploit any space in the defensive setup. Emphasize the importance of making quick, direct runs after winning possession.

    • Team Shape and Communication – In both the rondo and 2v2 scenarios, emphasize maintaining a solid team shape. Encourage players to communicate with their teammates to ensure proper spacing, defensive coverage, and effective support.

    • Defensive Awareness – Defenders should focus on positioning, cutting off passing lanes, and applying pressure to force errors from the attackers. The defending team should be prepared to transition quickly if possession is regained, and should aim to delay the attack until the recovering players can join the defensive phase.

  • Add Time Pressure
Introduce a time constraint for how long a team can maintain possession in the rondo before they must transition into attack. This adds urgency and pushes players to make quicker decisions and execute faster transitions.

Focus: Improve speed of transition and decision-making under time pressure.

  • Increase Defenders in 2v2
Add an additional defender to the 2v2 phase, increasing the difficulty and forcing the attacking team to find creative ways to break down a stronger defensive line. This will improve both individual and team attacking decision-making under pressure.

Focus: Develop attacking creativity and quick decision-making against a numerical disadvantage in the 2v2.
