Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 8 | Pitch size: 30x20

  • This drill focuses on improving players' 1v1 attacking skills, specifically receiving under pressure and creating separation from the defender. Players will start by receiving the ball with pressure from behind. The attacker’s goal is to either turn or use quick footwork to break free from the defender and score by either shooting into the central mini goal or dribbling through a coned gate. If the defender wins possession, they must immediately transition to attack by dribbling through the coned gate ahead of them to continue the drill.

  • • Receiving Under Pressure – Focus on the attacker’s ability to control the ball and maintain composure when receiving under pressure. Encourage the use of quick touches and scanning the surroundings to prepare for the defender’s challenge. Players should try to receive the ball in a way that allows them to either turn or create separation with their first touch.

    • Creating Separation – Emphasize the importance of using body feints, quick direction changes, and pace to create space between the attacker and defender. The attacker should focus on using their body to shield the ball, using the defender’s momentum against them to break free.

    • Decision Making in 1v1 Situations – Encourage players to assess whether they should turn and attack the goal directly, or dribble to the coned gate, depending on the positioning of the defender and available space. Timing and a clear understanding of the defender’s movements are key to making the correct decision.

    • Defensive Pressure and Transition – Instruct defenders to apply pressure effectively, using positioning to force the attacker into less favorable situations. If the defender wins the ball, they must transition immediately into attack, focusing on dribbling through the coned gate. This sharpens both the defender’s ability to recover the ball and the attacker’s ability to react to the pressure.

  • Add a Time Limit
Introduce a time limit for each attack, encouraging the attacker to make quicker decisions and increase the intensity of the play. This will help players develop the ability to finish under pressure and transition faster.

Focus: Increase speed and decision-making in attacking situations under time pressure.

  • Multiple Defenders
Add a second defender to increase the difficulty of the drill. This forces the attacker to use quicker, more creative movements to beat two defenders and score or dribble through the gate. The attackers must adapt to multiple defenders and use better decision-making to create goal-scoring opportunities.

Focus: Develop skills to break down multiple defenders in 1v1 situations and improve decision-making under pressure.
