Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 6 | Pitch size: 1/2 Pitch

  • This technical passing practice focuses on developing continuous third-man combinations through quick passing, movement and supporting angles. Four outfield players position themselves inside a square area, with one goalkeeper positioned at the top and another at the bottom. Play begins with the bottom goalkeeper passing into one of the higher players, who then sets the ball into a supporting lower player before a through pass is played into the opposite goalkeeper.

The sequence then repeats in the opposite direction, with the top goalkeeper initiating the same third-man combination pattern back toward the bottom goalkeeper. The practice creates a constant flow of passing actions, encouraging players to rotate the ball efficiently while developing timing, awareness and quality of support around the ball.

  • • Quality of the Set Pass:
Encourage players to play clean, well-weighted set passes that support the timing of the third-man action effectively.

    • Timing of Supporting Movements:
Reinforce players adjusting their movement early to create clear passing angles and maintain continuous rhythm.

    • Weight and Detail of Through Passes:
Coach players to disguise and weight through balls correctly so goalkeepers can receive comfortably on the move.

    • Body Shape and Awareness:
Emphasise receiving side-on with constant scanning to prepare for the next action before the ball arrives.

  • Coach Direction Change Call:
On the coach’s signal, players must immediately reverse the direction of the passing sequence and reorganise quickly.

    Focus:
Develops concentration, adaptability and communication while maintaining technical quality and passing rhythm under pressure.
