Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 7 | Pitch size: 1/2 Pitch

  • This attacking patterns practice focuses on creating chances through wide combinations, half-space penetration and coordinated attacking runs. Four attackers are positioned with two wide players and two central attackers, while play begins with a midfielder passing into one of the wide players. Upon receiving, the winger takes a touch inside to create a better angle before slipping a pass into the near-side central attacker making a run into the half-space area.

Once the central attacker receives in the half space, they must deliver a cross into the box for the far-side winger and second central attacker, who both make aggressive attacking runs toward goal. The practice encourages timing, movement and understanding between attackers while replicating common attacking patterns used to break defensive lines and create finishing opportunities.

  • • Wide Player Body Shape and Touch:
Encourage wingers to receive side-on and take a positive touch inside to attack space and improve passing angles.

    • Timing of the Half-Space Run:
Reinforce the central attacker arriving into the half space at speed to receive without slowing the attack.

    • Quality of the Final Delivery:
Coach players to deliver accurate crosses with correct pace, height and trajectory based on attacking movement.

    • Attacking Runs Into the Box:
Emphasise explosive, well-timed runs from attackers to attack different finishing zones and avoid arriving too early.

  • One-Touch Finish Requirement:
Require attackers to finish first time from the cross to increase tempo and improve attacking movement timing.

    Focus:
Improves finishing sharpness, attacking coordination and ability to execute under realistic match-speed conditions.

  • Add Passive Defensive Pressure:
Introduce passive defenders to apply light pressure during the crossing and finishing phase of the pattern.

    Focus:
Develops composure, decision-making and execution while maintaining attacking quality under increasing defensive pressure.
