Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 6 | Pitch size: 1/2 Pitch

  • This SAQ warm-up race combines speed, agility, reactions and technical finishing within a competitive relay format. Play begins with the coach calling out a specific colour, triggering players to react quickly and sprint toward the correct coloured poles before touching them. The focus in this first phase is on reaction speed, acceleration and the ability to process information quickly under pressure.

After touching the correct colour, the player must sprint around a mannequin and receive a pass for a one-touch finish into a mini goal. Once the finish is completed, the player collects a ball from behind the mini goal and becomes the next server, while the previous server joins the back of the queue. The continuous rotation creates a fast-paced warm-up that combines cognitive reactions with technical execution and movement quality.

  • • Reaction Speed and Awareness:
Encourage players to stay alert, process the coach’s call quickly and accelerate immediately toward the correct target.

    • Quality of Movement Around the Mannequin:
Reinforce sharp footwork, balanced turning mechanics and explosive acceleration after changing direction at speed.

    • First-Time Finishing Technique:
Coach players to adjust body shape early and strike the ball cleanly with minimal preparation touches.

    • Tempo and Rotation Between Roles:
Emphasise quick transitions between finishing, serving and rejoining the queue to maintain practice intensity throughout.

  • Multiple Colour Calls:
Call two colours in quick succession to increase cognitive demand and challenge players’ reaction processing speed.

    Focus:
Improves concentration, awareness and the ability to react accurately under increased mental and physical pressure.

  • Weaker Foot Finishing Requirement:
Require players to finish using their weaker foot during the one-touch finishing phase of the practice.

    Focus:
Develops technical balance, confidence and more consistent finishing quality under competitive race conditions.
