Netherlands Build-Up Centrally

Practice Breakdown:
Number of Players: 10 | Pitch size: 30x20
This build-up practice focuses on central build-up play. The team working on the build-up has 3 players locked into each side of the grid, while the defending team can also have a maximum of 3 players on one side of the grid. The attacking team should aim to draw pressure on one side before breaking lines or switching play to the opposite side in order to progress the ball. If the defending team wins possession, they must counter-attack in a 3v2 scenario and score into any of the 3 mini goals within 7 seconds.
• Patient Build-Up Play – Encourage the attacking team to be patient and controlled when building up play. They should look to draw defenders out of position and break lines with quick, precise passes to create space and progress the ball.
• Switching the Play – Stress the importance of switching the ball quickly and efficiently from one side of the grid to the other. The team must look for opportunities to change the angle of attack and exploit spaces left by the defending team.
• Defensive Pressure & Awareness – Defenders need to remain compact and press effectively, ensuring they don’t allow the attacking team to easily break lines. When the defending team wins possession, they must transition immediately and capitalize on the 3v2 overload.
• Quick Counter-Attack – The defending team must look to counter quickly, focusing on moving the ball forward fast to exploit the numerical advantage in the 3v2 scenario. Scoring within 7 seconds puts pressure on both teams to be sharp and efficient in their actions.
Limit Number of Touches
Limit the number of touches each player can have (e.g., 2 touches per player) to encourage quicker decision-making and faster ball movement, increasing the pressure on the attacking team.
Focus: Improve speed of play and decision-making during build-up and counter-attacks.
Add a Goalkeeper to the Counter-Attack
Introduce a goalkeeper for the defending team, adding a further challenge to the counter-attacking phase. This will require the defending team to be even more precise in their passing and finishing.
Focus: Enhance finishing under pressure and improve the defending team’s ability to transition effectively with a goalkeeper involved.
