Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 11 | Pitch size: 1/3 Pitch

  • This finishing drill allows players to develop their finishing from close range, specifically from low driven balls played from the cut-back zones. Play begins with a forward pass into one of the 2 deeper players. The deeper player will then set the ball back for the crosser, who will deliver a first-time low, driven ball across the face of goal. The 2 forwards will attack the cross at speed, aiming to finish the ball into the goal. The focus is on quick reactions, precise finishes, and timing runs into the box.

  • • Timing of Runs – The forwards should focus on attacking the ball at the right moment. They must time their runs to meet the cross at pace, ensuring they are in position to finish quickly and decisively. Explosive runs into the box are essential for this type of cross.

    • Finishing Technique – Players should be encouraged to finish with power and accuracy, focusing on getting a clean strike on the ball while keeping it low and on target. Emphasize the importance of keeping their shots low, especially when receiving crosses from wide areas.

    • Crossing Accuracy – The crosser should focus on delivering low, driven balls across the face of goal. Precision is key, as the cross must be placed in an area where the attackers can make a quick finish. The ball should be played into the path of the forwards, avoiding heavy touches or high crosses.

    • First-Time Deliveries – Encourage the crosser to hit the ball first-time to maintain the speed of the play and create more dynamic, fluid attacking situations. First-time crosses allow for less time for defenders to react and increase the attacking team's chances of scoring.

  • Add Defenders
Introduce 1 or 2 defenders in the box to apply pressure to the forwards during the attacking phase. This will add a layer of realism and increase the difficulty of finishing under pressure.
Focus: Develops the ability to finish in tight, contested spaces while under defensive pressure.

  • Vary the Crosses
Have the crosser vary the type of ball delivered (low driven, floated, or chipped) depending on the run of the forward. This will force the forwards to adjust and improve their finishing technique in different situations.
Focus: Enhances adaptability and finishing skills for various types of crosses.
