Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 8 | Pitch size: 20x20

  • This technical warm-up focuses on developing players' ability to make well-timed overlapping runs. Players will start in pairs, with one acting as the ball carrier and the other as the support player. The ball carrier will pass to the support player and then make an overlapping run to receive the ball back into space. To add intensity and keep the players engaged, two balls will be running simultaneously, encouraging quick decisions and more touches per player.

  • • Timing of the Overlap – Emphasize the importance of timing when making the overlapping run. The supporting player must wait until the ball carrier is ready to pass before committing to the overlap to avoid running into offside positions or unnecessary congestion.

    • Receiving in Space – Ensure the player making the overlapping run focuses on receiving the ball into space with their first touch. This helps the player maintain the pace of the attack and move the ball forward efficiently.

    • Quick Transitions – Since two balls are being used, players should focus on quick decision-making. After completing one set of overlaps, players should transition quickly to the other ball, increasing the overall intensity and engagement.

    • Support and Communication – Encourage players to communicate, especially with the ball carrier, by using their body language and verbal cues. This ensures that the timing of the runs and passes is synchronized.

  • Add a Defender
Introduce a passive defender into the drill. This defender can apply pressure but should not challenge the pass. This progression encourages attackers to make decisions under pressure and refine their passing and receiving skills.
Focus: Helps players get used to overlapping runs while under the pressure of a defender, improving their ability to execute in match-like conditions.

  • Full-Pitch Overlap
Extend the practice to a larger space, where players will overlap across the entire width of the pitch. This allows them to practice the overlap in a more realistic game scenario, incorporating longer passes and different angles of attack.
Focus: Reinforces the concept of overlapping runs in various situations, encouraging players to use the entire width of the field for dynamic attacking play.
