Practice Breakdown:
Number of Players: 8 | Pitch size: 40x30
Play starts with a 2v1 attacking scenario where two attackers combine to score in the main goal against a single defender. The attackers focus on quick passing, movement, and creating clear scoring chances in their numerical advantage. Once this phase finishes, two defenders positioned behind the goal immediately join the play as the coach serves a ball to start the next phase.
Now, the two attackers must quickly transition to defend against three defenders plus a goalkeeper who attack two mini goals. This 3v2 + GK phase challenges the attackers to recover rapidly, maintain strong defensive positioning, and communicate effectively to protect the goals. The defenders use their numerical advantage to create scoring opportunities, while the attackers focus on cohesive defending under pressure.
This drill improves players’ ability to switch between attacking and defending roles quickly, sharpens fitness and focus, and develops defensive organization during transitional moments.
• Encourage quick, creative passing and movement during the initial 2v1 attack – Players should use sharp combinations to break down the defender efficiently and create clear chances.
• Demand immediate and focused defensive transition after the first phase – Attackers must react quickly, adjust positioning, and communicate to organize defensive shape.
• Stress strong defensive teamwork and communication in the 3v2 + GK phase – Attackers must support each other, cover space, and stay compact to limit scoring opportunities.
• Promote high intensity, mental alertness, and physical effort throughout the drill – Rapid role changes require concentration and stamina to maintain effectiveness in both phases.
Set a Time Limit for the 2v1 Attack
Introduce a short time constraint (e.g., 8–10 seconds) to increase urgency and quicken attacking decisions.
Focus: Speed up play and encourage rapid, precise combinations under pressure.
Limit Touches in Defensive Phase
Restrict attackers and defenders to a maximum of two touches in the 3v2 + GK phase to increase pace and technical demand.
Focus: Improve quick control, passing accuracy, and decision-making in tight, high-pressure situations.
