Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 3 | Pitch size: 1/3 Pitch

  • This finishing practice begins with a short 1-2 passing combination in a wide area to simulate dynamic wing play. After combining, the wide player delivers a cross into the box for the centre forward to finish from close range. Immediately following the initial finish, the centre forward continues their movement by running around and through two mannequins positioned just outside the penalty area, where they receive a second ball thrown in the air by a coach for a first- or second-time finish.

This drill focuses on sharp attacking movements, varied types of finishes, and maintaining quality under repeated physical and technical demands.

  • • Wide Combination Timing – Ensure players execute the 1-2 at high speed with sharp touches to maintain the flow and replicate in-game tempo.

    • Body Shape for Finishing – Centre forwards should adjust their body early to attack the cross effectively, setting up for a clean and decisive strike.

    • Movement Between Finishes – Encourage high-intensity movement after the first finish to simulate game-like recovery and positional readjustment.

    • Second Finish Technique – The second ball is aerial, so players must focus on reading the flight and selecting an appropriate technique (volley, half-volley, header).

  • Add Passive Defender in the Box
Include a passive central defender who follows the striker’s run into the box to simulate pressure during the first finish from the cross.

    Focus:
Enhances movement timing, positioning between defenders, and concentration during delivery under light pressure.

  • Varied Second Ball Delivery
Have the coach mix in bouncing balls, headers, and clipped lobs for the second finish, requiring the striker to adapt and use multiple finishing techniques.

    Focus:
Develops versatility in execution, body control, and composure when reacting to unpredictable second-phase service.
