Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 6 | Pitch size: 20x20

  • This passing activation allows a team to develop their build-up patterns using a midfield 3. There are three different variations that the players can play through to work on different types of build-up and movement.

  • • Variation 1 – Short Passing & Quick Interchanges
Encourage the midfield 3 to play short, quick passes with an emphasis on fast combinations. The players should focus on maintaining possession while looking to break lines with short passes or by using overlapping movements. Timing and angles of support are key to maintaining fluidity in the build-up.

    • Variation 2 – Switch of Play & Wide Play
In this variation, the team should look to switch the ball quickly from one side to the other, using the width of the field to stretch the defensive lines. The midfielders need to be aware of the space and play the ball quickly to the wide areas, where the wingers or full-backs can receive and attack further up the field.

    • Variation 3 – Deep Laying Pivot & Forward Progression
The deep-lying midfielder should focus on playing progressive passes to the two more advanced midfielders, who in turn can play forward passes into the attack. This progression helps develop vertical passing, enabling the team to break the opposition’s defensive lines and penetrate the final third effectively.

  • Add Defensive Pressure
Introduce a small defensive unit to press the build-up from the midfield. This simulates game situations where the attacking team must retain possession and work through pressure.
Focus: This progression helps players improve their decision-making when facing pressure and reinforces the need for quick ball movement and spatial awareness.

  • Limit the Number of Touches
To increase intensity and focus on quick passing, limit the number of touches each player can take (e.g., maximum 2 touches).
Focus: This progression enhances the speed of play and forces the midfielders to make faster decisions while maintaining accuracy in their passes.
