Instructions/Setup:

In this build-up vs counter drill, the team in possession is supported by two goalkeepers, creating a 7v4 scenario where the attacking team must retain possession against the four pressing defenders. The objective is to focus on building up play from the back while under pressure, encouraging intelligent ball circulation and positioning to outplay the pressing defenders.

If the defending team wins possession, they transition into a counter-attack with the aim of scoring in either of the two goals located at the opposite end. The team in possession must be vigilant and maintain quick, precise passing to break through the press. The players along the sides of the grid can enter the central area to help disrupt the counter-attack, providing an additional layer of defensive support if the ball is lost.

Coaching Notes:

• Maintaining Possession Under Pressure: The team in possession must focus on moving the ball quickly and accurately, making use of their numerical advantage with the goalkeepers. Players should move to create passing angles and maintain a calm, composed mindset to avoid losing the ball under pressure.

• Transitioning to Defense: The defending team must be alert to any opportunity to win possession, closing down passing lanes and forcing mistakes. Upon winning the ball, they should aim to transition into a quick counter-attack, exploiting any gaps left by the attacking team.

• Supporting the Counter-Attack: The four players on the side of the grid can support the defending team’s counter-attack by quickly getting into position, either by cutting off passing options or joining the counter to increase numbers in the attack. Timing and awareness are key here.

• Quick Decision-Making: Both the attacking and defending teams must be quick in their decision-making. The attackers should look to break down the defense by moving the ball efficiently, while the defenders need to react rapidly to regain possession and capitalize on a counter-attacking opportunity.

Progression 1: Add a 2nd Phase of the Counter-Attack:

Once the defending team wins possession, they are allowed to play an additional pass before attacking the goal, simulating a more realistic counter-attack scenario where players may need to look for a better option.

Focus: Enhances the attacking team’s ability to quickly build up under pressure, while challenging the defenders to make fast, accurate decisions and execute a more structured counter-attack.
