Instructions/Setup:
This unopposed technical passing drill focuses on improving the accuracy and timing of vertical passes while maintaining fluid ball movement. Players will work on passing the ball forward to break through lines, while simultaneously ensuring the ball is controlled and passed between cones to maintain rhythm and precision.
The setup involves four vertical cones placed in a line. Players will pass the ball forward, then play a pass between the cones, and continue this pattern all the way to the top of the grid. The movement should be continuous, with each pass building up towards the goal. This drill allows players to work on both passing accuracy and decision-making in a controlled, low-pressure environment.
Coaching Notes:
• Passing Accuracy: Emphasize the importance of making accurate forward passes, ensuring the ball travels smoothly and directly to the next player or target cone.
• Use of Cones for Spatial Awareness: Players must be aware of the cones' positioning and ensure that their passes are played accurately between them, maintaining good technique and precision throughout.
• Fluid Movement: The drill should be done with fluid, continuous movement, ensuring the player plays forward and back with minimal delay. Focus on transitioning quickly between forward passes and cone passes.
• Body Position and Technique: Ensure players position themselves correctly when receiving and passing the ball. They should receive the ball with an open body to be able to pass smoothly in the intended direction.
Progression 1: Add a One-Touch Pass Between Cones:
Players now must play a one-touch pass when passing through the cones. This will encourage faster play and better ball control, focusing on quick, efficient decision-making and passing.
Focus: Enhances first-touch passing skills and encourages quicker decision-making, improving the pace and fluidity of the play.
Progression 2: Vary the Passing Length:
Change the length of the vertical passes (shorter or longer), forcing players to adjust the weight of their passes while maintaining accuracy and timing. This progression challenges the players to control and pass over different distances.
Focus: Improves the players' ability to judge the appropriate weight for different passes, ensuring they can maintain precision regardless of the distance between them and the target.
