Instructions/Setup:

This rondo drill focuses on recovery runs and transition play, helping players work on quick reactions, fitness, and maintaining possession under pressure. The drill is designed to simulate game-like scenarios where players must recover quickly after losing possession and transition into a defensive role.

The setup includes 3 grids, with 2 grids being live at any given time. Each live grid consists of a 4v2 rondo, where the team in possession is tasked with maintaining control of the ball, while the defenders attempt to win possession. Once the 2 defenders win possession in one grid, the player who lost possession and the player to their right must sprint into the open grid and become the 2 defenders, immediately transitioning into a defensive role.

Coaching Notes:

• Quick Transition: Emphasize the importance of rapid recovery runs and quick transitions from attack to defense. Players must react instantly when possession is lost and move into the next grid without hesitation.

• Pressure and Support: Encourage players to provide quick support to the ball carrier while maintaining proper spacing to make it easier for the team in possession to keep the ball. The defenders must press aggressively to force turnovers.

• Communication: Players should be vocal and communicate their movements, especially when transitioning into new grids. Clear calls will help teammates adjust their positions accordingly.

• Fitness and Stamina: Ensure players understand the importance of maintaining a high intensity throughout the drill, pushing themselves to recover quickly and continue working at pace.

Progression 1: Add a Time Limit for Transition:

Implement a time limit for each transition phase (e.g., 5 seconds to enter the new grid and start defending). This progression challenges the players to recover quickly and shift focus to defense under time pressure.

Focus: Enhances the players’ urgency and ability to recover and transition defensively within a limited time, simulating game-like conditions.
