Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 7 | Pitch size: 46x50

  • This attacking overload practice begins with a player dribbling forward to commit defenders before releasing a pass into one of two wide attackers positioned on the left and right. Once the wide player receives, the practice becomes live with a 3v2 attacking scenario, involving the initial dribbler, the wide attacker and a central number 9 attacking against two defenders.

The attacking unit is encouraged to combine quickly, create overloads and attack the goal with purpose. The practice can be progressed by allowing the opposite winger—who does not initially receive the pass—to join the phase, creating a 4v2 and increasing the attacking options and decision-making demands.

  • • Positive Dribbling: Encourage the initial attacker to drive forward with intent to attract defenders before releasing the pass.

    • Wide Player Decision-Making: Reinforce quick choices upon receiving—dribble, combine or deliver based on defender positioning.

    • Movement of the Number 9: Coach the striker to vary movements, offering support, stretching the defence or creating space for runners.

    • Speed of Attack: Emphasise fast combinations and forward momentum to exploit the numerical advantage.

  • Allow the Opposite Winger to Join:
The winger on the far side is released once the first pass is played wide, creating a 4v2 attacking overload.

Focus: Increases attacking options, off-ball movement and recognition of overloads.

  • Touch Limit on Attackers:
Restrict attackers to two touches where possible to increase tempo and force quicker decisions.

Focus: Develops speed of play, combination quality and composure in the final third.
