Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 7 | Pitch size: 1/3 Pitch

  • This unopposed finishing practice focuses on creating goalscoring opportunities from inswinging deliveries. Play begins with a square pass in midfield, after which the midfielder plays the ball out wide to a winger. Upon receiving, the winger takes a touch back inside—either cutting infield or slightly withdrawing the ball—to create the angle for an inswinging cross into the penalty area.

Two attackers make coordinated runs into the box to attack the delivery and finish unopposed. The practice replicates common match scenarios where wide players cut inside or cut back before whipping the ball towards the back-post or central finishing zones.

  • • Wide Player’s First Touch: Encourage a controlled touch inside to set up the correct body shape for an inswinging delivery.

    • Crossing Detail: Reinforce the importance of pace, trajectory and accuracy, targeting back-post and central areas.

    • Timing of Attacking Runs: Coach the two attackers to vary movements, attacking different zones to maximise finishing options.

    • End Product: Emphasise composed finishing based on the type and height of the cross.

  • One-Touch Finish for Attackers:
Require the attackers to finish first time from the cross.

Focus: Improves timing, anticipation and finishing technique.

  • Add a Passive Defender:
Introduce a passive defender in the box to apply light pressure and force more realistic movement and finishing decisions.

Focus: Increases realism and challenges composure in the penalty area.
