Paris Build Up & Transitions

Instructions/Setup:

In this build-up drill, the team in possession is tasked with progressing play into one of the two wide players, who are locked into small 5x5-yard grids located in opposite corners of the halfway line. This drill focuses on building play from the back and transitioning quickly to exploit spaces in wide areas.

Play begins with the team in possession looking to progress the ball through the middle of the field and out to the wide player in one of the grids. Once the ball reaches the wide zone, a counter attack is triggered from the opposite side, where the other wide player must join the attack and counter against an unbalanced defense in a 7v7 scenario. The attacking team must transition quickly to exploit the overload on the opposite side.

Coaching Notes:

• Quick Transition Play: Players should focus on quickly moving the ball from defense to attack, making use of quick passes and transitions to move the ball into the wide areas.

• Wide Play Utilization: The wide players must make themselves available to receive passes, creating width to stretch the opposition and provide options for the ball carrier.

• Timing and Movement: The timing of the pass to the wide player is crucial. Players need to recognize when to make runs, either into the wide space or central areas, to support the attack and pull the opposition out of position.

• Exploiting Imbalances: Upon reaching the wide zone, players must quickly identify the 7v7 situation and exploit the unbalanced defense. Movement off the ball and quick decisions will create openings for the counter attack.
