Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 8 | Pitch size: 50x65

  • This drill begins with an unopposed switch of play, focusing on improving passing accuracy and timing in transition. The objective is to encourage quick decision-making and effective attacking play once the defenders enter the scenario.

The play starts with an unopposed switch of play from one winger to a central player, and then the ball is passed to the opposite winger. As soon as the ball reaches the opposite winger, the attack transitions into an opposed phase. The attackers must now play out a 3v2 scenario, with a 7-second limit to complete the attack.

  • • Accurate Switching of Play: Encourage players to focus on making a crisp, accurate switch of play from one winger to the other, ensuring the ball is delivered quickly and precisely to allow for fast transitions.

    • Quick Reaction to Opposed Phase: As soon as the ball reaches the opposite winger, the attackers must quickly transition to playing in a 3v2 scenario. Players should be aware of the need to exploit the numerical advantage within the time limit.

    • Movement off the Ball: Encourage attackers to move into space and make supporting runs to provide options for the ball carrier. Players should vary their movements, using decoy runs and diagonal runs to create confusion for the defenders.

    • Decision-Making Under Time Pressure: With the 7-second limit, attackers must make quick decisions to either create a shooting opportunity or pass to a teammate in a better position.

  • Increase Attackers to 4v3 or 5v4:

In this progression, the attacking team now has either a 4v3 or 5v4 advantage in the opposed phase. The setup allows for more players to be involved in the attack, creating additional passing options and space to exploit.

Focus: The larger numerical advantage gives the attacking team more freedom to move the ball quickly, make more varied runs, and force the defenders into tougher decision-making. The goal is to encourage better movement off the ball, quick decision-making, and effective use of the numerical superiority to create goal-scoring opportunities.
