Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 10 | Pitch size: 30x40

  • This drill takes place in a central area with a 2v2 setup, and includes two end zones—each containing one bounce player for either team. During play, teams aim to create attacking combinations within the 2v2, while having the option to use their bounce player to create a temporary 3v2 overload and break the defensive line.

The objective is to attack the mini goal directly ahead by combining quickly, using movement and angles to disrupt the defenders. The bounce player remains static in the end zone and must be used intelligently to link play and support forward momentum. Play restarts after every goal or if the ball exits the grid.

  • • Encourage fast, sharp passing to exploit overloads with the bounce player – Players should recognize the value of the 3v2 and use it quickly before defenders can adjust their shape

    • Promote intelligent movement off the ball to open passing lanes – Attackers must be proactive in their movement to receive on angles and stretch the defenders

    • Focus on compact, disciplined defending when outnumbered 3v2 – Defenders should delay play, stay connected, and avoid diving in when at a numerical disadvantage

    • Reinforce quality first touch and quick execution in tight areas – Players should control the ball efficiently and make decisions quickly in the small-sided space

  • Limit Time or Touches When Using the Bounce Player

Allow only one touch or a 3-second time limit when playing off the bounce player to encourage urgency and decision-making under pressure.

Focus: Increases speed of play and enhances players' ability to make quick, decisive actions in tight moments.

  • Rotate Bounce Players Into the 2v2 After Each Attack

After each attack, swap one of the central 2v2 players with their bounce player to keep intensity high and ensure everyone plays under both roles.

Focus: Builds fitness, engagement, and understanding of how to support and exploit overloads from both central and wide positions.
