Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 11 | Pitch size: 30x50

  • This is a high-tempo finishing drill designed to simulate match-realistic pressure from behind. An attacker will make a forward run and receive a through ball from a teammate or coach, entering the box with a recovery defender chasing immediately behind them. Although the finish itself may be unopposed, the pressure is intense and forces quick, clean execution.

The key technical focus is on the attacker’s first touch, body shape, and ability to remain composed with a recovering defender closing them down. This helps improve finishing under duress and replicates moments where attackers have half a yard of space before being caught.

  • • Focus on the weight and angle of the first touch – The initial touch must take the attacker away from the recovering defender while positioning the ball perfectly to shoot quickly.

    • Encourage composure in the final action under pressure – Players must resist panicking and focus on striking cleanly, using minimal touches when necessary.

    • Highlight the importance of scanning before receiving the through ball – Attackers should be aware of space, the goalkeeper’s position, and the trailing defender before the ball arrives.

    • Reinforce clean body shape and shooting technique at speed – Even with pressure, players should maintain balance and stay over the ball when finishing.

  • Recovery Defender Starts Closer to the Attacker

Reduce the initial distance between the attacker and defender so the pressure arrives almost instantly as the ball is received.

Focus: Increases the demand on quick reactions, clean touches, and rapid execution of the finish under tight pressure.
