Practice Breakdown:
Number of Players: 11 | Pitch size: 30x50
This practice begins with three players working the ball in a central zone, aiming to break through a defensive line of two defenders who are actively screening and blocking forward passes. The focus is on speed of play, disguise, and timing of the pass to penetrate the defensive screen effectively.
Once the attacking trio successfully plays through the line, the receiving attackers engage in a 3v2 attacking phase against two recovering defenders in the final third. The transition from build-up to final action replicates real match scenarios where breaking a line creates numerical overloads in dangerous areas.
• Encourage quick passing combinations to disorganize the defensive screen. – Use short, sharp passes with minimal touches to move defenders out of shape and open space between them.
• Reinforce the importance of scanning and playing with head up. – Players should check shoulders constantly to assess options and time their forward passes effectively under pressure.
• Promote disguised passes and body feints to manipulate space. – Attackers should use clever deception with body shape to shift defenders and exploit gaps in the screen.
• Challenge players to support forward immediately after penetrating. – Once the line is broken, initial passers must quickly join the attack to maintain overloads and finish moves with tempo.
Add a Recovering Defender From the Initial Zone
If the ball breaks the line, one of the original screening defenders recovers into the 3v2 to make it a 3v3.
Focus: Encourages urgency in transition, attacking decisiveness, and quicker play before the recovering defender disrupts the overload advantage.
Allow Defenders to Step Out and Press
Rather than holding position, defenders in the screen can step out to press, forcing attackers to react and adjust angles and timing.
Focus: Trains adaptability in build-up play, player awareness, and the importance of timing and disguise in forward passing under pressure.
