Practice Breakdown:
Number of Players: 4 | Pitch size: 20x20
This technical drill focuses on players developing a clean first touch and close control by receiving the ball and shifting it around an oncoming passive defender. Players will begin by standing opposite a server or teammate who passes the ball in, and their task is to take a sharp first touch to either side of the approaching player and then dribble into space.
The emphasis is on reacting quickly, choosing the correct direction, and mastering close ball control with both feet. The passive defender serves as a moving obstacle to help simulate real in-game pressure and challenge the player’s awareness, body positioning, and first-touch decisions.
• Focus on receiving with the correct foot depending on defender’s approach – Players should scan before the ball arrives to decide the best direction to take their first touch
• Encourage sharp, purposeful first touches that move the ball out of pressure – Touch should take the ball into space with intent to accelerate away
• Promote light, quick footwork when shifting around the oncoming player – Players must stay on their toes and use short steps for fast adjustments
• Reinforce scanning before and after receiving to improve decision-making – Awareness of pressure and space is key for mastering first touch under pressure
Add a Passive Defender With More Pressure
Instead of jogging, the passive defender moves with more intent, forcing the attacker to adjust touch and direction under semi-realistic pressure.
Focus: Develops composure and ball security when taking a first touch with limited time and space.
Vary the Delivery (Aerial or Driven)
Alternate between different types of passes — some firm, some lofted — to improve control under various first-touch scenarios.
Focus: Builds all-around technical control and prepares players for diverse in-game receiving situations.
