Instructions/Setup:
In this 1v1 drill, play starts with both players dribbling around the grid. Once both players complete a full circuit and return to their starting positions, they must attempt to score into the opposite mini goal.
The objective is for each player to be the first to get their shot off, gaining the advantage for the second phase of the drill. The player who successfully shoots first will start the second phase, where a coach or a third player will pass a second ball to them. This initiates an opposed 1v1 scenario, forcing the player to quickly transition from shooting to defending and re-engaging in the drill.
Coaching Notes:
• Explosive Start: Focus on quick reactions and acceleration when returning to the starting position, ensuring players can burst into space and get a shot off before their opponent.
• Composure in Shooting: Encourage players to stay calm and focus on accurate, controlled shots when finishing on goal, ensuring that they are not rushed by the pressure of the opponent.
• Transition Speed: Emphasize the importance of transitioning quickly from the shooting phase to the defending 1v1. The player must be able to quickly switch mentality from attacker to defender.
• Defensive Positioning: In the opposed 1v1 phase, remind players to use proper defensive posture, forcing the attacker into a position where they are limited in their options.
Progression 1: Add Time Limit:
Introduce a time limit for the first phase of dribbling and shooting. Players must complete the circuit and shoot within a specific time frame to encourage urgency and increase intensity.
Focus: Increases the need for speed and decision-making under pressure, making both the dribbling and shooting phases more challenging.
Progression 2: Introduce Multiple Defenders:
In the second phase, allow the player who wins the first 1v1 to now face two defenders in a 2v1 situation. This creates a higher level of difficulty, requiring the player to think faster and make better decisions under pressure.
Focus: Develops the ability to maintain possession and attack while under defensive pressure, enhancing decision-making in high-intensity scenarios.
