Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 4 | Pitch size: 40x40

  • In this 4-phase finishing practice, the attacker focuses on making dynamic runs across the defender to receive the ball in space. The key objective is for the attacker to move both inside and outside the defender to create separation and receive a pass for a quality finish.

The practice is split into 4 phases, with the attacker making runs in different directions to challenge the defender. After completing all 4 finishes, the attackers will switch roles, allowing them to work on their offensive runs and also recover during their rest periods. This high-intensity drill combines technical finishing with the fitness aspect of constant movement.

  • • Run Timing – Encourage attackers to time their runs across the defender effectively. The run should be made when the ball is played, allowing the attacker to meet it in stride and finish with minimal delay.

    • Inside and Outside Runs – Attackers should vary their runs, using both inside and outside movements to break the defender’s line of sight and create space. Inside runs can be used to cut across defenders and finish centrally, while outside runs can be used to stretch the defense and create crossing angles or finish from wider positions.

    • Finishing Under Pressure – Once the attacker has made the run and received the ball, they should focus on finishing quickly and accurately under pressure. Stress the importance of maintaining composure and making clinical decisions when finishing the attack.

    • Work/Rest Balance – The practice should be high-intensity, with attackers moving quickly and covering a lot of ground. Ensure there are adequate rest periods between the phases, so attackers can recover and repeat the high-intensity efforts.

  • Add a Defender Challenge
Introduce a defender who will try to close down the space and prevent the attacker from receiving the ball in the desired position. This will challenge the attacker’s ability to make smart runs and find space behind the defender. The defender should not actively engage the attacker until the ball is passed, simulating match conditions.

    Focus:
Improves attacker movement and the ability to find space while being pressured by a defender.

  • Add a Quick Transition After Finish
After each finish, the attacker must quickly transition to defend against the next attacking phase. This adds a fitness component to the drill and keeps the practice fast-paced. Attackers will finish, recover, and then switch roles, ensuring they stay engaged throughout the practice.

    Focus:
Increases fitness levels and helps attackers work on quick transitions between attacking and defending.
