Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 14 | Pitch size: 60x30

  • This possession-based practice focuses on developing the ability to play line-breaking passes during the build-up phase. The drill begins with a 4v2 rondo where two defenders press into a grid. The team in possession must complete 5 passes within the grid before attempting to break the defensive lines and progress the ball into the opposite zone. The ball is passed through 2 central players who replicate a midfield pair to simulate progression through a midfield. If the team successfully breaks the lines and progresses, the two screening defenders now press in the opposite grid, while the two players who originally pressed drop into screening roles.

  • • Passing and Movement – Emphasize the importance of quick, accurate passing and intelligent movement off the ball. Players must create angles for the passer to break the defensive lines.

    • Line-Breaking Passes – Encourage players to look for vertical passes into space, through defenders, or splitting the lines. These passes should be played with the right weight and timing to ensure the ball bypasses the defenders.

    • Midfielders’ Role – The two central players who replicate midfielders should be active in supporting the ball carrier, offering clear passing lanes while also positioning themselves to receive the ball in space to help transition play.

    • Pressure and Transition – Once the ball is successfully progressed, the pressure shifts. The original defenders who pressed now drop into screening roles, while the previous screeners must transition to apply pressure. This shift allows players to practice both defending and attacking transitions.

  • Add a Time Limit for Breaking the Lines
Set a time limit (e.g., 20–30 seconds) for the team in possession to break the lines after 5 passes. This increases the intensity and urgency in decision-making.

    Focus:
Improves the speed of decision-making and encourages quicker thinking when breaking the lines and progressing the play.

  • Restrict Number of Touches for Attackers
Limit the number of touches each attacking player can take (e.g., 2 or 3 touches max), forcing quicker and more efficient passing and movement.

    Focus:
Helps improve players' ability to think and move quickly under pressure, replicating game-like conditions where time and space are limited.
